Have you ever struggled with festive binge eating? I've been there, and want to help you avoid that this festive season, so I've compiled some of my top tips to beat binge eating this Christmas in one post.
It seems that every year, we roll out of Halloween and straight into Christmas. Is anyone else still shocked at how early the Christmas chocolates line the supermarket shelves!?
Christmas gatherings, family expectations, financial pressures, food, food, and more food are upon us—this time of year can all feel overwhelming and understandably have us turning to food as a way to cope.
As someone who has faced many a binge-filled Christmas, I understand how easy it is to get caught in a downward spiral of emotional eating during this festive season.
So, here are a few of my top tips to help you navigate holiday eating without falling back into old patterns:
Tip #1: Hit the Pause Button
If you’re asked to do something or go somewhere, give yourself permission to pause.
Try responding with, “I’ll check my diary and get back to you.” This buys you time to decide if you truly have the space and energy for that commitment. When you say yes to things you don’t really want to do, resentment can start building up, triggering stress hormones—and that can often lead to mindless eating. Protect your peace by being selective with your “yes".
Tip #2: Let Go of Perfection
Remember, not everything has to be perfect.
Nobody is going to stop loving you if the presents aren’t meticulously wrapped or if the table setting isn’t Instagram-worthy. People remember the fun they had (or didn’t have), not whether every detail was flawless. So give yourself permission to let go of perfectionism and focus on enjoying the moments.
Tip #3: Reduce Your Budget
Money stress can be a major trigger for emotional eating, especially around the holidays.
Consider setting a lower budget for gifts this year. Spending less can ease financial anxiety, which can also reduce the urge to binge. Instead of expensive gifts, focus on creating meaningful experiences with loved ones.
You are worthy of peace and joy in your body this Christmas season.
Let’s make this holiday season a time of true joy and connection, free from the pressures that often lead us to turn to food for comfort.
You deserve to feel peaceful and confident, no matter what’s on the table!
I hope these tips on how to beat binge eating this Christmas have been valuable and that you have a safe and happy festive season.
